The US Consulate in Vancouver is delighted to be taking part in the City of Vancouver’s Pride festivities. The Consulate sent representatives to the Pride Week Proclamation and Launch on July 28 at Vancouver City Hall. The Proclamation was opened by a prayer from a Coast Salish Elder, which was followed by the Proclamation speech which was given by Mayor Gregor Robertson. They, along with President and Vice President of the Pride Society, Tim Richards and Chrissy Taylor and City Councillor Tim Stevenson then all raised the Pride Flag for the official start of Pride Week.
Additionally, the Consulate sponsored the first American gay-straight alliance youth chorus, Diverse Harmony, to travel to Vancouver and take part in and sing at the Celebration of Light Fireworks festival. Diverse Harmony, hailing from Seattle, is a 58-member chorus which strives to perform music that opens the hearts and minds of people and communities and provides a safe environment for youth of diverse backgrounds to share their love of music and singing and to be accepted for who they are. Their performance was a perfect complement to Team USA’s fireworks display and the various Pride activities happening around the area. Diverse Harmony also sang with the Vancouver based choir, Cor Flammae at a free public event at Christ Alive Community Church in Vancouver.
