U.S. Consulate Offers Gift Cards to Windsor Healthcare Workers

TORONTO – The U.S. Consulate General asks Windsor-area healthcare workers to “Take a Break on US” with gift cards to local restaurants on Tuesday, May 12, celebrated as International Nurses Day. Working in partnership with the City of Windsor, the U.S. Consulate in Toronto will offer 900 gift cards to area healthcare workers to express appreciation for their service to American citizens at Detroit-area hospitals.

Consul General Stanford and colleagues, along with volunteers from the City of Windsor, will distribute the cards at the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit tunnel on Tuesday, May 12 from 5-8 a.m. and from 1-4 p.m. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens will join CG Stanford to show his appreciation to the healthcare workers. U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Canada Border Services Agency staff, along with bridge and tunnel management are also providing support.

The gift card initiative will offer each healthcare worker a break in the form of coffee, breakfast, or lunch, and also provides a boost to Windsor’s food and beverage industry.

The gift cards will be accompanied by a letter from CG Stanford, a Michigan resident and a frequent visitor to the Windsor-Detroit area. In it he notes, “As our two countries face the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, we rely on each other more than ever. Your support to vulnerable Americans during this crisis is deeply appreciated. Now more than ever, the ties that keep us together are vitally important.”

Media Availability: U.S. Consul General Stanford and Windsor Mayor Dilkens will host a media availability at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12. This event will occur at the Windsor Tunnel Plaza (adjacent to Park Street). For security reasons, media are required to RSVP to confirm attendance via: ateliszewsky@citywindsor.ca.
