U.S Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Canadian Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt had a productive meeting in Toronto on December 18, to discuss key bilateral transportation issues, including proposals to align U.S. and Canadian rail safety standards.
Secretary Foxx noted that U.S. and Canadian transportation networks are closely connected across all modes of transportation, and that the two countries must continue to work together to protect the safety of our citizens, while maintaining the essential role of transportation in supporting our growing economies. The two officials noted their intent to continue regulatory cooperation, reflecting our close ties and our strong economic partnership.
“Safety is a shared responsibility and there is no greater evidence of that than the cross-border cooperation that exists between the United States and Canada on issues related to transporting crude oil and hazardous materials by rail,” Secretary Foxx said. “While we have different regulatory processes, we share a common goal of ensuring the safety of our citizens and communities along what truly is one North American freight rail network. We will continue to work together closely and communicate often to achieve this goal.”
