Statement from U.S. Ambassador to Canada David L. Cohen on Independence Day
I want to wish all Americans in Canada a very happy Fourth of July!
As someone who calls Philadelphia – the birthplace of American democracy – home, July 4th holds special meaning for me. Today we celebrate the 247th anniversary of our country’s founding and take the opportunity to remind ourselves of the important role democracy plays in protecting the freedoms we enjoy and which define us as a country.
The United States and Canada share an enduring commitment to defending our shared democratic values at home and around the world. President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau reinforced this commitment during the President’s visit to Ottawa in March.
To quote President Biden, “We have stood together to defend sovereignty, to defend democracy, to defend freedom for ourselves and all who wish it.”
Today, as we celebrate democracy at home and abroad, I could not be more honored to represent President Biden and the United States here in Canada — our close friend, engaged neighbor, and stalwart ally.
