Statement by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Richard Mills on Canada Day

Over the last two years, it has been an honor to serve here in Canada and work with so many Canadian partners on issues of importance to the citizens of both Canada and the United States. Today, on behalf of the team at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa and our seven U.S. consulates in Canada, wish those partners and all Canadians a Happy Canada Day.

“While Canada Day festivities will be more subdued across the country this year, and the staff across the United States Mission to Canada will still take time this Canada Day to celebrate this exceptional country.  For the United States, our strong relationship with Canada and its people is more important now than ever.

The strength of the relationship between our two countries has perhaps never been more evident than over the past few months as we worked together to protect the safety of our citizens from the health and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Officials in both countries have been in constant contact to manage the threat on both sides of the border as well as help combat the virus globally.

“Along with marking Canada’s birthday, this year we are also celebrating the coming into force of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).  This is an example of our countries’ commitment to working together to create a more prosperous North America. The United States, Canada and Mexico worked tirelessly to develop this modernized agreement that sets high standards for labor, the environment, digital trade, and more.

“As former President Ronald Reagan said, We’re more than friends and neighbors and allies; we are kin, who together have built the most productive relationship between any two countries in the world today.

Today we want to celebrate that enduring relationship between our two countries and join Canadians in celebrating a very Happy Canada Day!”
