Consulate General Vancouver welcomed Tayyibah Taylor, the founding editor-in-chief and publisher of Azizah Magazine, a leading publication for Muslim Women, for a two-day visit last week. Ms. Taylor, who was named as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World by The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, and whom Huffington Post included in their “Top Ten American Muslim Women You Should Know,” brought her perspective on the changing roles, opportunities, and challenges for Muslim women and the importance of breaking down stereotypes through empowerment to audiences in and around Vancouver.
At a dinner hosted by the BC Muslim Association and attended by Women’s Circle members and BCMA leadership, Ms. Taylor talked about her conversion to Islam and how the Canadian Muslim community can best connect with women, and shared strategies for successful youth engagement. She also attended a Food Fair hosted by the UBC Arab Student Association and the UBC Turkish Student Society, where she encouraged over 100 students and community members to shatter stereotypes through leveraging talents and opportunities and fostering leadership and fellowship. Ms. Taylor talked with the students, who represented numerous countries across the Middle East and Turkey, about her numerous visits to those regions, and shared her experience working with women.
Ms. Taylor also appeared on CKNW Radio’s Bill Good Show and was the subject of a column by the Vancouver Sun’s Daphne Bramham.
