Security Message for U.S. Citizens:  Planned Demonstrations in Montreal

The U.S. Consulate General informs U.S. citizens that several demonstrations are expected to take place in downtown Montreal on Friday, January 20, and Saturday, January 21, 2017.

At 11:00 am on Friday, January 20, a group of approximately 200 participants are planning to protest at Metro Place des Arts Place (corner of Rue Jeanne-Mance and Boulevard de Maisonneuve).  The route they will march is unknown at this time.

At 6:00 pm on January 20, a second demonstration will take place at Phillips Square. Approximately 130 individuals are expected to be present and the route they will march is unknown at this time.

On Saturday January 21, 2017 at 11:00 am, a group of 2,000 are scheduled to gather at Esplanade de la Place des Arts for a protest.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
