Security Message for U.S. Citizens:  Planned Demonstration on Friday, December 8, 2017

The U.S. Consulate in Montreal informs U.S. citizens of a planned demonstration at the U.S. Consulate on Friday, December 8, 2017, from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Local authorities are aware of the demonstration and will be on site.  In anticipation of the protest, the U.S. Consulate will be closed to the public for consular services from 11:30 through the end of the business day on Friday, December 8 and will re-open for business on Monday, December 11. U.S. citizens needing emergency assistance after 11:30 am on Friday, December 8 until the opening of business on Monday, December 11 should call 1-514-398-9695.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  The U.S. Consulate reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security.  Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities.
