On Tuesday, February 26, 2014 Consul General Richard Riley, Consul Scott Whitmore, and other staff of the Halifax Consulate were pleased to take part in a Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) that involved Coast Guard ships and personnel from both the United States and Canada.
Commander Jay Caputo of the USCGC Campbell was gracious in welcoming us all to his ship and giving us a very informative tour. Consul General Riley even took part in an exercise that saw him leave the relative comfort of the zodiac, wade through the North Atlantic, and “rescue” someone in distress on an island.
All came away with a deepened appreciation for the work of the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards and the very difficult conditions in which they must work.
