Secretary Michael R. Pompeo And NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Before Their Meeting

SECRETARY GENERAL STOLTENBERG:  Hello, good to see you again.

SECRETARY POMPEO:  Yeah, it’s good to see you.

SECRETARY GENERAL STOLTENBERG:  Okay.  So, Secretary Pompeo, once again, welcome.

SECRETARY POMPEO:  Great to be here.

SECRETARY GENERAL STOLTENBERG:  It’s great to see you here, and we met recently in Washington, and it’s great to welcome you to the NATO headquarters once again.  And we are going to have an important foreign ministerial meeting.  We’re going to address the progress we’re making on burden-sharing.  European allies and Canada have added 100 billion extra for defense spending, but we need to keep up the momentum and do even more.  And then we will also address strategic issues like Russia, arms control, but also the implications of the rise of China, and NATO remains the only platform where North America and Europe sit together, meet together, and make decisions together on issues of great importance of our shared security.

Once again, welcome, and thank you so much for your strong personal commitment to this alliance, for your leadership, and for the way you help us to move this alliance forward.  So it’s great to see you again.

SECRETARY POMPEO:  Yeah, it’s great to see you too.  Thanks for coming to Washington and spending time with myself and with the President.  We had a great series of conversations.  I’m looking forward to the meetings in December as well, and I know we’ll have a successful time here together here too where we set the conditions so we can have a successful leaders’ summit and continue to drive this incredibly important NATO mission forward.

So thanks for having me.
