Health Alert, U.S. Embassy Ottawa, Canada

May 22, 2020

Location: Canada

Event: COVID-19 Update, U.S.-Canada Border Restrictions

Information:

Border Restrictions Extended
The U.S. and Canadian governments agreed to extend cross-border travel restrictions to non-essential travel through June 22. Non-essential travel includes tourism, recreation, and entertainment. Permitted essential travel includes: work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, and health, immediate medical care, and safety and security. Land borders are operating at reduced capacity and with limited hours. Travelers entering Canada must present a credible 14-day quarantine plan and adhere to other health measures. See CBP and CBSA websites for details.

With the onset of warmer weather and upcoming holiday weekends, please note that entering Canadian waters for recreational boating or fishing is not allowed under the current border restrictions. In addition, effective June 1, 2020, Transport Canada is also prohibiting pleasure craft from operating in Canada’s Arctic coastal waters north of the 60th parallel until October 31, 2020.

CBSA Suspends Service at Select Locations
On May 12, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced a temporary suspension of service at certain small vessel reporting sites, small airports of entry, ferry terminals and to the Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC) program.  These COVID-19 related measures are temporary and will remain in effect until further notice. This CBSA news release provides details. CBSA also published this list of all CBSA locations that remain open.

Actions to Take:

Keep STEP Enrollment Active

  • Encourage U.S. citizen friends and family to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the U.S. Embassy and Consulates can contact them with updated information.
