Marybeth Turner is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and the current Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassy Ottawa. She most recently served as Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at U.S. Embassy Beijing, where she led the Department of State’s largest overseas economic team and served as the Ambassador’s senior economic policy advisor and Acting DCM. Prior to those roles, Marybeth was the U.S. government’s Winter Olympic Coordinator for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
In Washington, Marybeth most recently served as Acting Director of the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia (2017-19). Previously, she served as a Senior Economist, G20 delegate, and UN negotiator in the Bureau of Economic Affairs, as a Staff Assistant for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and as a Watch Officer at the State Department Operations Center. Overseas, Marybeth served as Deputy Economic Chief and trade lead at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi from 2012-2015 and completed previous assignments at U.S. Embassy Bogota and at the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu, China.
Marybeth holds an MBA/MS from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University. She is also a graduate of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies. Her languages include Mandarin, Spanish, and some Vietnamese and French. Marybeth is married to Michael Turner – they have three children who are living with them in Canada.
