A career Foreign Service Officer, Robert P. Sanders is the Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal. Most recently, he served as the Political Counselor and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Robert has served in a wide number of positions both in Washington and overseas, including in Islamabad, Pakistan; Beirut, Lebanon; Provincial Reconstruction Team-Khost, Afghanistan; and as Principal Officer in Thessaloniki, Greece.

In Washington, he was Director of the Office of Policy Planning and Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, an Assessor with the Foreign Service Board of Examiners, and trained civilians across the interagency for service on integrated military-civilian teams in Afghanistan at the Foreign Service Institute. Robert served three tours in the Executive Secretariat, including serving as a Crisis Management Program Officer and a Senior Watch Officer in the State Department Operations Center, which responds to unfolding international emergencies, ensures senior State Department officials are kept abreast of breaking events, and supports the daily work and travel of the Secretary of State. He also served as an Advance Officer for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Robert speaks French, Greek, Spanish, and Urdu and is an active member of GLIFAA+ (Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies). He graduated from Georgetown University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and completed a master’s degree at National Defense University’s Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy as part of senior leadership training. He is a native of California.
