Engaging with the Arctic is engaging with people! Earlier this month, Consul General Mélanie Zimmerman and officials from the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa attended the Northern Lights Conference in Ottawa where they met with key leaders from Canada’s North.

Productive meetings were held with Premier of Nunavut Joe Savikataaq, Deputy Premier of Nunavut David Akeeagok, President of the Makivik Cooporation Charlie Watt, and Vice-Chairperson of the Kativik Regional Government Jennifer Munick. CG Zimmerman and Cultural Affairs Officer Susan Bridenstine also met with Vice President of the Nunavut Arctic College Rebecca Mearns.

Discussions focused on the bilateral partnerships between the United States and Canada in the Arctic to foster environmental protection, sustainable development, human health, and the role of indigenous people.
