Throughout American history, our democracy has been tested. It was tested again yesterday by the assault on the Capitol. The U.S. Congress carried out its duties as enshrined in the Constitution to certify the results of the U.S. presidential election.
Our institutions have stood strong in support of our democratic principles. In this moment of reflection, we find ourselves shocked and saddened by the unacceptable rioting and lawlessness of those who stormed the Capitol, but proud that the process moved forward, undeterred. In the face of a challenge, our democratic institutions held firm.
We deeply value our Canadian friends and partners who stand with us in these challenging times and reaffirm our commitment to work on behalf of the American people in support of our deep and enduring partnership with Canada.
