On April 30th, the Consul General of the United States Jim Dickmeyer hosted a cocktail reception with the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence. The event honored the American filmmakers at the 2015 Hot Docs Festival, which was held on April 23 – May 3, 2015. Hot Docs President Christ McDonald and Managing Director Brett Hendrie also attended the reception and welcomed the guests with opening remarks.

At the event, the U.S. Consulate General celebrated the achievement of American filmmakers, which constituted the majority of documentary submissions. Each year, the film festival presents over 180 innovative documentaries from Canada and all over the world. This year 59 U.S. documentaries were selected and invited to the 2015 Film Festival, seven of which had their World Premiere at Hot Docs.

Founded in 1993 by Documentary Organization of Canada, the Hot Docs is North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market, which takes place in Toronto annually. The Hot Docs provide a platform through which documentary professionals can showcase their work. Carrying a tremendous impact on the public, documentaries have a powerful emotional appeal, which stir empathy and bring about engagement and social advocacy, simultaneously raising awareness on significant issues around the world.
